Color Theory

Hi Stamping Friend,
I thought today I would talk about color. Some struggle when trying to choose colors to use together in a project. A little knowledge about color theory can make putting colors together a lot less stressful.

Generally when talking about color it is illustrated with a wheel or circle as in the image below. Under the main color wheel are images that illustrate primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Let's start there.
(this photo is from the article: Color Meanings by Jacob Olesen)

  • The three primary colors, as shown in the above left illustration, are Yellow, Red and Blue. These colors are called primary because they are the colors you begin with and combine to get other colors.
  • The three secondary colors, as shown in the above center, are what you get when you combine equal amounts of two primary colors. Yellow and Red combine to make Orange. Red and Blue combine to make Purple, and Blue and Yellow combine to make Green.
  • There are six tertiary colors which are produced by combining equal amounts of a primary color and a neighboring secondary color. Yellow and Orange combine to make Amber (aka Yellow-Orange). Orange and Red make Vermillion (aka Red-Orange). Red and Purple make Magenta (aka Red-Violet). Purple and Blue make Violet (aka Blue-Violet). Blue and Green make Teal (aka Blue-Green). Green and Yellow make Chartreuse (aka Yellow-Green).
Next week I'll discuss how to actually choose colors for you projects. In the meantime, Stampin' Up!® takes a lot of the guesswork out of that part of the creative process.
